Diagnosis and Underdiagnosis of Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is a lifelong autoimmune condition in which the ingestion of gluten, found in wheat, rye and barley results in damage to the small intestine. Some people with coeliac disease are also unable to tolerate oats. It is 1 in 100 people in the UK have coeliac disease yet only 1 in 8 of these individuals have been diagnosed1,2.
