Coeliac Forum- Issue 23

Welcome to the latest issue of Coeliac Forum. In this issue our first article looks at some research into the use of a saliva test in screening  for coeliac disease in children.

Two recent clinical papers on coeliac disease are reviewed and summarised. The first explores the perceptions of adolescents living on a gluten-free diet and the way they approach compliance. The second clinical paper looks at the role a gluten-free diet may play in normalising homocysteine concentrations in patients with coeliac disease, high levels of which have recently been implicated in a number of pathologies which are common to coeliac disease including osteoporotic fracture and recurrent miscarriage.

The Clinical Practice section reviews the use of pharmacy-led repeat prescribing schemes for gluten-free foods in the UK and looks at one particular scheme in Northamptonshire PCT.

In this issue's Product News section Glutafin announces furtherexciting product improvements to its range of gluten-free foods including its mixes. Whilst the Coeliac Disease Resource Centre, Glutafin's healthcare professional service, announces the inclusion of an online literature request facility to make it even easier to request healthcare professional resources. In addition the upcoming launch of the fourth learning module, from a series of five for healthcare professionals, is announced. These modules aim to support clinical practice and help professionals meet their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs.

Finally, our Question and Answer section looks at the current recommendations for calcium  intake and what the best model of care for patients with coeliac disease.
