New CPD Module for Healthcare Professionals launched
The Coeliac Disease Resource Centre (CDRC), supported by Glutafin, has launched the fourth in its series of five Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules for healthcare professionals. This new module focuses on ‘Coeliac Disease, Adherence and the Role of the Healthcare Professional’.
The module examines what is meant by adherence and the importance of dietary adherence in coeliac disease. It discusses how this can be monitored and the possible reasons for poor response to a gluten-free diet. In addition, psychological issues and patient adherence are reviewed, whilst barriers and strategies to help improve it are considered. Threecase studies are used to illustrate the issues in relation to adherence and professionals are encouraged to partake in a reflective-practice exercise where they are asked to review barriers to adherence and the strategies used to overcome them.
Previous modules in the series focus on the ‘Underdiagnosis of coeliac disease’, ‘Patient groups at risk of coeliac disease’ and ‘Understanding the Gluten-free Diet, all of which have proved popular CPD tools with healthcare professionals. All of these modules are still available to healthcare professionals and the fifth module, focusing on the ‘Management of Patients with Established Coeliac Disease’, is still to be launched.
These evidence-based learning modules include a series of directed-learning activities, reflective-practice exercises and case studies to complete. Successful completion of the modules can then be used as evidence of CPD. On completion of the module healthcare professionals should return a copy of the directed learning activities and case study to the CDRC for assessment. Reflective learning exercises are designed to assist healthcare professionals in reflecting on current clinical practice and for this reason they are not assessed. A filofax-sized card of practice points, to refer to in clinical practice, and a certificate demonstrating CPD activity will be forwarded to all professionals completing the assessment.
